In the Vietnamese capital, a fire on nine floors of an apartment complex has resulted in 56 deaths and scores more injuries.

Vietnam News Agency reported that the fire began at around midnight local time, on Wednesday (17:00 GMT), but was extinguished by 2am (2:00 GMT) on Tuesday.

Hanoi’s police department issued a report saying that 37 people had been injured and 56 people died.

According to state media, the building housed 150 residents. Smoke inhalation was treated as well as injuries suffered by residents who tried to flee the building.

According to the state-owned VTV, four children are among those who were killed.

Images on television showed night-time firefighters at the site, equipped with hoses, ladders, and other equipment, while day-time images revealed a dark column of smoke rising out of the building.
