In connection with an October fire in the R. Salazar Park Apartments in central El Paso, two teens were charged Monday for arson.
A condition 4 structure fire broke out Oct. 1, along Eucalyptus Street between E. Mills Ave.
The El Paso Fire Marshal’s Office arson investigators conducted a subsequent investigation and determined that the two 13-year olds who started the fire were intentionally responsible.
The El Paso Fire Marshal’s Office and the El Paso ISD Police Department took juveniles in custody on Dec. 11, 2020, then processed them by the El Paso County Juvenile Probation Department.
According to El Paso Fire Department, the fire started at R. Salazar Apartments around 7 pm on Oct. 1.
Around 50 firefighters were dispatched to the incident.
Later that evening, the fire was put out.
The fire did not cause any injuries.
HOME had bought the apartments, and planned to renovate them at a cost of $93,000,000.
Roman Robles, the Public Information Officer for HOME at that time said they planned to continue the renovations despite the incident.
Robles said, “It’s a setback, but we will continue construction. We’ll assess and see the damage, but this project is moving forward.”
Robles said the complex had 286 apartments and that the bulk of the impact was on two specific buildings.
Robles said, “I think it’s building 9, it should contain nine units, and building eight I think has more roof damage than anything else, and it contains three units.”
