Merrill Fire Department responded to a fire in a home at W4903 Ackerman Road. The Town of Merrill, Monday, December 4, 2023 at just before 10:00 a.m., found heavy smoke rising from the roof. The Lincoln County 911 Dispatch Center reported that the initial information was, “that the house fire started in the basement but was spreading to other parts of the residence.”
MFD Engine 61 and Medic 61 responded. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputies had already arrived on the scene. They confirmed that the single person and a small dog were able to escape the house without any injuries.
The Battalion chief Phil Skoug stated that “initial crews were deployed in 1 3/4 line up the driveway, and began a transitional assault on the fire from the area around the family room of the house.” Personnel entered the building to attack the fire inside.
MFD asked for mutual assistance from Pine River Fire Department. Corning Fire Department. Russell Fire Department. City of Wausau Fire Department. They also issued a general alarm to Merrill firefighters who were off duty. The department also asked for help from Tomahawk Emergency Medical Services and Wisconsin Public Service.
Skoug stated in a release that “Drafting Operations were Set Up Near the Bottom of the Driveway.” Due to the narrow roads, mutual aid equipment and personnel were staged on Knight Lake Rd.
He said that the fire quickly reached the roof. Interior crews started to do an overhaul in order to find the fire on the roof. The crews found the location of the fire and put out the rest during the salvage and overhaul operation.”
The crews were present for several hours.
According to MFD, the lower floor suffered “moderate” damage and also sustained smoke damage on the second level.
The fire, according to the initial investigation of the investigators, was not malicious, but it is suspected to have originated in the basement.
