After a Monday night fire in the attic of Endeavour Elementary in Mukilteo, a new plan has been put in place to help families and school staff.

More than forty firefighters from four different fire departments were needed to extinguish the fire that started in the attic of the school. After the work was done, the school suffered extensive smoke damage and a hole in the roof.

After assessing the damage caused by the fire, district crews estimated that it would be a long time before the students and teachers could return to the school.

In a letter to Endeavour’s community, the principal said that the school would not be able to open before the winter break began on December 18. We are hoping it will open on January 2. 2.”

Now we are concentrating on cleaning the laptops only as a preventative measure. “I’m very thankful that they do not appear to have been damaged,” Bradford said.

A restoration company was hired by the district to check and clean each laptop before it is picked up by families for remote learning. Distribution of laptops is scheduled for Wednesday. The students who have access to computers or laptops at home can use these devices to attend classes via Zoom beginning Thursday, December 7

Bradford explained that “they will have their teacher on Zoom all morning, but then take a break for lunch. Then we will do special classes in the afternoons like music and PE.”

Bradford said that the students would be using Zoom in conjunction with their teachers for the entire morning, but they’d take a break at lunch. Then we could do special classes such as PE or music during the afternoon.

Mukilteo District School Board said that it had considered moving classrooms from one school to another, but this would have been a logistical challenge. So, it chose to move to distance education.

Diane Bradford, a spokesperson for KOMO News said that the district had hired a contractor third party to clean the laptops in the school. The company made sure the computers did not have any water or smoke damage.

In order to start remote classes Thursday, the district plans to deliver computers to all students by Wednesday. This new plan will limit the lost days at three. However, this could increase depending on how soon students can connect with their teacher for remote learning.

Bradford was asked by KOMO News about how many days Endeavour’s students have missed since the 180-day requirement for instruction per school year.

Bradford explained that a district can request a day of waiver or days of waiver if there was an emergency. Bradford said that the OSPI has the power to give a waiver in such a situation.

Pointe of Grace Lutheran Church is located at 5425 Harbour Pointe Boulevard, Mukilteo, and will be distributing breakfast and lunch bags to families on the free or reduced meal plan. The service will provide daily meals for each Endeavour student starting on December 6 at the times listed below.
