The extensive damage caused by the fire to the house remains a mystery.
A home located on the northeast corner of Jal and Adrian Nieto Road caught fire after 5 am Nov. 30.
Jal Chief Fire John Moody arrived first and reported that the house was completely engulfed by his arrival shortly before 6 am.
The owner told me he had left to go to work at 5:10 am and that the house was not on fire. Moody stated that they were toned at 5:41 am. “We didn’t even go inside. When we arrived, the roof had already begun to fall in.
Kent Willis, the owner of the home that was not supposed to be powered, said he used some rooms for storage.
Moody stated that there was electricity coming into the breakers on the house, but they were all in “off”, making it unlikely an electrical fault caused the fire.
Moody stated that the interior of the car was in such a bad state, it was impossible to pinpoint a source of ignition. As of right now, we’re classifying this as “undetermined.”
Willis claimed that Xcel Energy informed him the electricity had been shut off to the adjacent building. He said that when the firefighters started spraying on the building, electricity came from the power line leading to his home.
Willis stated that there was no power in the house. “Xcel told me that it had been terminated, and they would remove the meter.”
The fire was not unusual for him, but he did see two semi-trucks parked in an open pullout across the street. This is a common sight around the area.
He said, “I’ve heard that some sand trucks will speed up and do other stuff at a certain place when they use drugs.” When I left, both doors were closed and there was no light. My wife called me twenty minutes later to tell me that it was on fire.
Willis estimates that he lost between $20,000 and $30,000. He claimed to have purchased the house and land for $20,000 in 2005.
I was planning to open my own knife store in this building. “That was my intention to do that starting next year,” said he. “I’m not sure how I will clean it up. A guy quoted me between $2,500 and $3,500 depending on whether there was asbestos in the room.
