The fire that ravaged a Brading home early this morning, destroying it and damaging the adjacent property too, has sent a 60-year old man to Salisbury Hospital.
Island Echo reported that firefighters were dispatched to New Road just before 02:50, when the fire broke out at a 2-storey residence. Flames could be seen licking the roof.
Eyewitnesses report that two loud explosions awakened people out of their beds, before a man fell from the property into the street. Neighbours initially took care of him before he was transferred to the hospital. He was airlifted from the island to mainland sometime before 05:00.
The other people are all accounted for.
Island Echo has learned that the Police came across this scene while on patrol at night, and spotted the flames and smoke from afar. Three fire engines were initially called to Bowcombe for a large incident, but by the time the firefighters arrived the house was already well on fire.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the home was destroyed to 100%, and the fire spread into the adjacent property.
Island Echo captured aerial photos that show the extent of damage. There are only 4 walls left and 2 chimney stacks.
Firefighters are still on the scene to dampen down any charred remnants. Firefighters from Freshwater and Ventnor as well as Ryde, Sandown, and Ryde, along with mainland crews in St Mary’s and Southsea and Havant, Liphook, and Fareham, have all been fighting this fire.
The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, but an investigation on site is expected to begin in due time.
The Ryde-Sandown main road is closed both ways. Drivers are being diverted to St Helens or Bembridge.
