Yesterday morning, emergency personnel were mobilized in Calle 56 in Merida Center between Calle 61 and Calle 63 at 11 a.m. after the reported collapse of roof of clothing store.
A call to an emergency alerted the Merida Municipal Police and the Fire Department of Ministry of Public Security. Bricklayers, who were renovating the building that houses Caruso Clothing, were working on the project when a part of roof collapsed. However, none of their employees was injured.
After inspecting the scene, firefighters left, stating that they did not see any danger from a possible short circuit which could have caused a fire. Yucatan Civil Protection personnel (Procivy), intervened and collected data to determine what happened. They then asked the people in charge of the project to lower the curtain so that red ribbons could be placed on the area.
This was to warn the passersby not to pass by the place, as there is a possibility they may suffer an injury. Procivy employees placed red ribbons on the door of the building in the afternoon. The renovations were halted until the permits for the project could be obtained. A similar but more serious event took place on May 24, 2021 when the roof of Fantasy Miguel, located at Calle 58 & 59, in Merida’s Center, collapsed. No injuries were reported, although workers were injured.
Reports indicate that a part of roof on the third-floor of the building on this corner collapsed. The municipal authorities have confirmed there were no injuries, despite initial reports that one person was injured. To expedite their work, the agents of Merida’s Municipal Police (PMM), closed the block surrounding the accident to create traffic.
Officials had to change the public transportation route that runs through the North and the West of Merida. Around 10 patrol cars, 5 ambulances from the Ministry of Public Security, and Red Cross as well as a few fire units arrived. It happened at around 6:30 pm. The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but it appears to be excessive humidity.
According to the Municipal Police this building is over 100 years old. It was once a popular supermarket. The search was conducted by firefighters, State Civil Protection and Municipal Civil Protection. Preliminary reports by the police indicate that there have been no fatalities or injuries. Firefighters and Procivy staff activated the search protocol, which was supported by agents trained to find people as well as National Guard personnel. Paramedics treated 20 patients who had a nervous collapse on the spot, 10 of them were employees, and the other ten clients.
However, none of the victims required hospitalization. Civil Protection closed down the shop and secured the area until the evaluation was completed. The employee told police that they had been on the 1st floor and heard what he described as a “bomb” sound. The building immediately went dark, everything was shaking. She was diagnosed with a nervous collapse. It was impossible to determine the full extent of damage caused by the collapse. The building has been operating successfully for two years and now features a brand new façade. However, improvements are ongoing as preventive tapes are used to cover parts of the roof that still need repair.
A woman suffered injuries on April 14, 2023 when a part of roof from the Del Sol shop, which is located between Calle 65-60 in central Merida, fell onto her. The woman, a 19-year-old girl with serious injuries was reported at the time. The woman was transferred to hospital by paramedics from the municipality. The rubble from the collapsed part of the marquee was spread on the sidewalk. Municipal agents marked the boundary to prevent passersby from passing through the zone. The store manager assured that the management company would cover the costs of medical care for the injured person.
