Child endangerment is being charged against a woman who was accused of abandoning a baby inside a car that had been heated up.
Anna Louise Stern (28), was charged with a felony of endangering children’s welfare, misdemeanor of recklessly putting another in danger, and summary charges for driving under suspension of privileges and leaving an unattended child inside a car.
She was sent to Blair County Prison because she could not post bail of $30,000 She will be arraigned on Sept. 13, before Magistrate District Judge Daniel C. DeAntonio.
Documents filed in court accuse Stern of abandoning the 16-month old boy while shopping at Dollar General (1013 N. Fourth Ave.) between 5 and 5.15 pm on Friday.
Police reported that there were several reports to the police regarding the child in a blue Honda. When officers arrived, Stern was holding the crying victim and the hair and clothes were saturated with perspiration.
Documents in court state that the vehicle was about 40 feet away from the entrance to the store. Stern told police she had left her child alone in the car as she went shopping.
She said a man entered the shop shouting at the person who had the child in their car. Stern told police that after talking to him, she took the items she felt were the most important from her cart and went to the check-out line. She confessed to buying multiple items and removing the child’s arms from a witness before leaving the store.
A female police witness said she had been drawn towards the vehicle by the music. She said that she heard the screaming child over the loud music and saw that the car had been unlocked. The child was also screaming and was sweating profusely. The woman removed the child from the car after the man found Stern. She held him for a few minutes until Stern left the store.
The police said that the security footage shows Stern walking into the shop at 5:01 pm.
The male witnesses is seen at 5:07 pm entering the shop and trying to attract Stern’s interest. The male returns to the store at 5:11 pm, looking for the individual who had left the child behind in the vehicle. He makes contact with Stern.
Police reported that Stern left the shop at 5:13 pm.
The police said that not only were the doors unlocked but also the keys in the vehicle. This left the child exposed to not only the weather but to anyone who may have come across the vehicle.
The police have reported that Stern’s driving license has also been suspended.
