According to Brigadier Selvy Mhlala, spokesperson for Mpumalanga Police, a group of four assailants robbed passengers travelling in a Toyota Quantum from Gauteng.
According to the information received, a Quantum GL 10 seater taxi from Gauteng Province was traveling on the N12 towards Mpumalanga when the tracking firm cut off the fuel supply to the vehicle. This caused the taxi to come to a halt,” stated Mohlala.
The driver of the taxi got out as he tried to contact the tracking firm.
The taxi driver had failed to inform the company tracking his vehicle that he was travelling from Gauteng to Mpumalanga.
Mohlala said that “four men came and pretended they were offering some assistance, asking whether everything was alright.”
Two of the men armed with guns rushed into the taxi, demanded that the passengers hand over their bags, cellphones and cash.
The robbers fled the scene after collecting all the property of the passengers. They hid in the bush.
The taxi driver fired a few shots at the fleeing robbers.
Police were dispatched to the location. “During the investigation, two mobile phones were found next to the dead man, with a bullet wound in the left ear.” said Mohlala.
The police have urged those with any information about crime to call the Crime Stop line on 086-001-0111 or send it via the My SAPS app. They also encourage people to visit their nearest station.

He said that the gunman, who was trying to steal a wallet from the VW Jetta stolen vehicle, accidentally shot his leg.
The report says that instead of helping him, his accomplices drove away, leaving him bleeding profusely.
